Happy Birthday Blackpool Tower from Mike James
I would like to say “Happy Birthday Blackpool Tower from MIke James”. The Tower and especially the ballroom have brought me so much pleasure over the years that I thought I would share my memories with you about how it all started.
It all started way back in the late fifties when I went to Blackpool on holiday with my Mum, Dad and my Sister Gene and we went in the Blackpool Tower Ballrom My dad had been offered a job playing in the band but my mother did not thing it would give my dad any security of work and sadly to say he turn the offer down. The organist at the time was Reginald Dixon and the Orchestra was Charlie Barlow .I remember to this day watching the Band which would have been about 15 piece orchestra and I deceided then that one day I wanted to be that band leader in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom ..It all came true in 1990 when I was asked by First Leisure to put a big band back in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. The had not a resident big band inthe ballroom since 1972. I could not believe my luck. I did three summers there six nights a week from early summer until the end of the lights in early November. What a great time I had and a fulfilment of my dreams.
.Sadly they do not have a resident band in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom any more .Since those summer season days I have been back many times on a one night basis doing Party nights and Strictly night . I also did the Queens Jubilee Weekend in which through my office Alan Arnison Entertainments I provided the entertainment for all the weekend .On that week end I had a full Orchestra with a string sections and featured vocalists
. On the bank holiday Tuesday I put in the Ballroom .”The Biggest Tea Party in the World” .which completely sold out and was televised all day long on BBC.
My last appearence so far at the World famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom was for new years eve 2012
and once again was a great and to me a memorable night .I can only hope that it was not the last appearance of the The MIke James Sound but even if it is at least the dream I had when I was a five year old boy as come true
